Velda and I were married at a small wedding chapel in Reno, NV.  We wanted to be married on Valentine's day but we lived in Sacramento and there was a nasty snowstorm in the Sierra-Nevada mountains that Saturday.  We had to turn back and wait another week for our "big day".  We put the $100 fee for the chapel on Visa, of course.

Aldous points of Interest

ˇ         Aldous surnames began with William Aldous of Fressingfield, England, about 1450.  So, we're probably all related!

ˇ          The Utah-Idaho branch of the Aldous family came to the USA a couple of generations before my direct ancestors came to NY

ˇ         The NY and Canadian branches are very closely related and arrived in North America at approximately the same time

ˇ          My G-G-Grandfather James George Aldous came to the NY, USA via Canada.  His first daughter Mary Ann was born in Canada in 1835.

William J. Aldous-founder of the Aldous population in Oregon (1894)

James George Aldous (who was born in 1811 in Laxfield, England) and his wife Elizabeth Bedell or Bedwell (who was born in 1817 in Horham ,Suffolk, England) came to the USA in about 1835.  They settled in (New) Granville, NY where my Great-grandfather William J. Aldous was born in1838.  William moved to the Hamlet of Indian Lake, NY about 1860. There, he married Josephine Brooks on Christmas day, 1862.  Then in 1863, he enlisted in the Union Army and served with the NY State volunteers in company K, 2nd regiment in the Civil War.  In 1864, Josephine and her child died while giving birth.

After the war, William retuned to Indian Lake and in 1866, when he was 27, William married Alsina Lamphere. They had eight children between 1867 and 1883 four of whom were boys.  Alsina passed away in 1886 at age 33.

In 1887,  at age 49, William married my Great-Grandmother, Florence "Flora", Helen Porter who was 33 years old at the time and in 1888, my Grandfather James William "Will" Aldous was born near Raquette Lake, NY.  "Will" was the oldest of their five children, three born in NY and two born in Oregon. A boy, George who was born in NY died as an infant.  William J. and Flora and their two children, "Will" and Martha Beatrice, moved from NY to Junction City, Oregon in 1894 to work in the logging industry. Their youngest daughter Vivien and youngest son, Sidney "Sid" were born in Junction City.

William J. Aldous returned to Indian Lake, NY sometime after 1907 (at about age 70) where he passed away in 1929 at age 90.  He is buried in the Cedar River cemetary at Indian Lake.  Will , Sid, Bea, Vivien and their mother Flora remained in Oregon for the rest of their lives. Flora taught school near Walton, Oregon to support her family.

Later, Will married my Grandmother, Edith Deborah Mabe and had two boys, Leslie (my Dad) and Edgar  and one girl, Laura.  Both boys later settled in central Oregon.  Will's brother, Sid had four boys, Luther, James, Edward and Thomas all but Luther settled in the Willamette valley of Oregon near the town of Drain. These are the ancestors of the Oregon Aldous families.
